PREPARING FOR YOUR TREATMENT AND CARING FOR YOURSELF POST-PROCEDURE
JUVÉDERM® DERMAL FILLER
PREPARING FOR YOUR TREATMENT
One Week Before Treatment
-
Avoid Blood-Thinning Agents:
-
If approved by your healthcare provider, avoid medications and supplements that can thin the blood, such as:
-
Aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and other NSAIDs.
-
Fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, garlic supplements, and St. John’s wort.
-
-
Tylenol (acetaminophen) is a safe alternative for pain relief.
-
-
Limit Alcohol and Caffeine:
-
Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine consumption for at least 24-48 hours before your appointment to minimize the risk of bruising.
-
-
Pause Skin Treatments:
-
Refrain from scheduling chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser treatments on the area to be treated.
-
Three Days Before Treatment
-
Avoid Hair Removal:
-
Do not wax, thread, or use depilatory creams on the treatment area.
-
-
Stop Using Certain Products:
-
Discontinue the use of retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), or exfoliating agents that may irritate the skin.
-
Day of Treatment
-
Clean Skin:
-
Arrive with clean, makeup-free, and lotion-free skin. Avoid applying oils, sunscreen, or heavy creams to the treatment area.
-
-
Stay Hydrated:
-
Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated, which may improve treatment results.
-
-
Avoid Strenuous Activity:
-
Do not engage in vigorous exercise before your appointment, as this can increase blood flow and the risk of bruising.
-
-
Health Considerations:
-
Inform us if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any allergies, especially to lidocaine or hyaluronic acid.
-
Notify us of any recent infections, skin conditions, or medical treatments.
-
Additional Notes
-
If you have a history of cold sores and the treatment area includes your lips, you may need an antiviral medication to prevent an outbreak.
-
Plan your treatment at least 2 weeks before any important social events to allow any potential swelling or bruising to subside.
CARING FOR YOURSELF POST-PROCEDURE
Immediately After Treatment
-
Expect Mild Symptoms:
-
Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, firmness, or bruising at the injection sites is normal and should resolve within a few days.
-
You may also feel small lumps or bumps under the skin, which will settle as the filler integrates.
-
-
Apply Ice if Needed:
-
Use a cold compress or ice pack wrapped in a clean cloth to reduce swelling or discomfort. Avoid applying ice directly to the skin.
-
First 24-48 Hours
-
Avoid Touching the Area:
-
Do not touch, rub, or massage the treated area unless directed by your provider. This helps prevent the filler from shifting.
-
-
No Makeup or Skincare Products:
-
Refrain from applying makeup, creams, or other skincare products to the treated area for at least 24 hours.
-
-
Stay Upright:
-
Sleep with your head elevated and avoid lying flat for the first night to minimize swelling.
-
-
Avoid Alcohol and Intense Activity:
-
Do not consume alcohol or engage in strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours to reduce the risk of bruising and swelling.
-
-
No Extreme Temperatures:
-
Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, or exposure to excessive heat or cold.
-
First Week After Treatment
-
Minimize Sun Exposure:
-
Protect the treated area from the sun by wearing sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) and avoiding prolonged exposure.
-
-
Avoid Dental Procedures:
-
Schedule any dental treatments at least 2 weeks before or after your filler appointment to reduce the risk of filler migration or infection.
-
-
No Exfoliation or Treatments:
-
Avoid chemical peels, laser treatments, or facial massages until your provider gives the green light.
-
